The SpikeVest is similar to our original CoyoteVest but it uses Velcro instead of snap buckles. Just like the CoyoteVest the purpose of the SpikeVest is to help slow down or prevent a surprise attack and give you enough time to react before serious injury occurs.
Naturally the SpikeVest includes a full set of removable chrome spikes. Spikes for the neck and set (2) Spike strips for the sides of the back. The spikes are made from very hard plastic and they're not dangerous to handle, but with enough pressure they're sharp enough to hurt. The spikes provide an important line of defense but Velcro makes them easy to remove whenever you want.
The SpikeVest is constructed with a super tough puncture resistant ballistic fabric that can resist sharp canine teeth and a large collar reinforced with genuine DuPont™ Kevlar®. It wraps around your dog easily and stays snug and secure with two wide Velcro belts. There's a D-ring for connecting your leash and reflective features that make your dog more visible at night. It's water repellent and there are no metal parts that can rust. It's hand-washable with a mild detergent and can be air dried in the shade*. Do not put it in the dryer.
DuPont™ and Kevlar® are trademarks or registered trademarks of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company.
Please be aware that even though the Velcro works well it could be less secure than snap buckles if not used properly. Even with the highest quality Velcro, the Velcro will wear out over time. The Velcro should be kept clean from hair and dirt.
*Color topper may fade overtime in sun. Please note that the fluorescent orange fabric will fade quicker due to the yellow and orange hues. This color change does not impact the quality or effectiveness of the vest (fading similar to hunters vest, hats and safety vest.)
If you're concerned with wild predators our CoyoteWhiskers and HawkShield accessories are highly recommended for the SpikeVest. For additional throat protection we recommend our CoyoteCollar which can be used with the SpikeVest or by itself.
Choosing a Size
Measure the length of the back from the shoulder to the start of the tail (do not include the neck) -- make sure the dog is standing up and not sitting. Hold the ruler straight do not bend it down over the dogs behind. We have found that measuring the back length by following the dog's back curvature can add to the length and throw off the sizing. The vests are designed with a straight back and do not have a curve to them. So when measuring, it's important that your dog is standing and you're measuring a straight shot from the front shoulder to the start of the tail without curving the measuring tape. If you're purchasing as a gift we do offer gift cards that can help keep your secret.
After measuring if you're still uncertain which size to get, it is usually better to go with the smaller size. We receive more returns/exchanges with the vest being too large rather than too small.
And if you're still not sure we can help. Just email us your measurements and a good side-view picture of your dog and we can give our best suggestion.
Please Note: For the SpikeVest we also recommend measuring the neck circumference and waist (not chest) circumference. If your dogs waist or neck is larger than than the ranges shown we recommend ordering an Extender for the waist and/or the neck. If your dogs waist is at the lower end or less than the given range we recommend ordering a Stay Strap to prevent the flap from dangling.
