SpikeVest for Cats

$ 109.95

The SpikeVest for Cats is similar to the original CoyoteVest but it uses Velcro instead of snap buckles and is designed specifically for cats. Just like the CoyoteVest the purpose of the SpikeVest is to slow down or prevent a surprise attack and give the owner enough time to intervene before serious injury occurs.

The SpikeVest for Cats covers the back and the neck with a formidable array of shiny spikes that makes it very difficult for a coyote or aggressive dog to bite down. It's entirely constructed with a super tough puncture resistant Cordura® fabric that can resist sharp teeth and features a large collar to protect the back of the neck.

The SpikeVest for Cats includes a full set of removable chrome spikes. Spikes for the neck and set (2) Spike strips for the sides of the back. The spikes are made from very hard plastic because metal spikes are too heavy and they can rust. The spikes are not dangerous to handle but with enough pressure they are sharp enough to hurt. Velcro makes it easy to remove the spikes whenever necessary to avoid any chance of accidental injury to other animals or people.

The SpikeVest  for Cats also works perfectly with our CoyoteWhiskers accessory which is recommended if you are concerned with predators.

The SpikeVest wraps around your cat easily and stays snug and secure with two wide Velcro belts. Your cat should not be left unattended while wearing the SpikeVest. There is a D-ring at the top of the vest for use with a leash and the reflective features make your cat more visible at night. The vest is water-proof, there are no metal parts that can rust, and it's hand-washable with a mild detergent and air dry in shade. Do not put in dryer. *Color topper may fade overtime in sun. Please note that the fluorescent orange fabric will fade quicker due to the yellow and orange hues. This color change does not impact the quality or effectiveness of the vest (Similar to hunters vest, hats and safety vest.)

Choosing a Size

When choosing the correct size vest the most important thing is the length of your cat's back. The collar and the waist are very adjustable but if you order a vest that is longer or shorter than the length of your cat's back it will not fit properly and you will need to exchange it. If your purchasing as a gift we do offer gift cards that can help keep your secret.

All you have to do is measure the length of the back from the shoulder to the start of the tail -- make sure the cat is standing up and not sitting. If your cat is a little rounder than normal we would recommend ordering the Extenders for the waist & possibly the Neck.

After measuring and you are still uncertain on which size to get, it is usually better to go with the smaller size. We receive more returns/exchanges with the vest being too large rather than too small.

EXAMPLES:

  • Back length 10" - 12" recommend Extra Small.
  • Back length 12" - 15" recommend Small.
  • Back length 15" - 18" recommend Medium.

Great quality, but restricts head movement.

"This is Maya-sumi in a size small. She’s 9. 2 lbs and has a 12 inch back length. In general the vest fits Maya well. I know that the stiffness of the Cordura will work out some over time. My only issue is with the way that the collar around the back of the neck is attached, since it doesn’t allow her to move her head easily or even hold it upright in the natural position without extra effort. She has CH and the interference with her head motion makes her lose her balance and fall over quite a bit. The extra stiffness of all the layers at the seam between the vest and collar also means that when she does bring her head up it ends up creasing the lighter fabric of the vest right over her shoulders, which can’t be comfortable. It also tired her out quickly, probably since she’s fighting the stiffness of the fabric to do so. The SpikeVest for small dogs has a slight difference in cut to the vest portion that gives space for the collar to sit upright when the animal has their head up, but also lay flat when they put their head down, while not leaving a gap in protection. I’m honestly a bit baffled why the cat version doesn’t have this ability, especially since the one of the same size for dogs does. (I purchased that one first by mistake, but the collar on it is indeed too wide for a kitty neck length. ) Other than that - and wishing it came in a bright purple! - I am thrilled with it. Thank you so much for making these for the adventurous kitties of the world!"

Great for Adventure Kitties!

"Love this product! Bought it for my adventure kitty to wear when we are hiking and camping. While he does not appreciate having this on in the house (he gets very dramatic and lays on the ground like he can't move), he has no issues wearing it when we are exploring--he completely forgets it's there! I also love that it makes him much more visible and easy to keep track of in the undergrowth."

I really want to love this product..

"Immediately upon receiving this product, I noticed how well it was built. Sturdy velcro, a nice feel and finish to the material, and solid, shiny spikes. The spikes are made out of plastic, but all you need to do is step on this thing once in the night, and you will always remember to keep it on a shelf. Trust me. I believe that I ordered the right size for my cat, as his shoulders fill the vest out quite well, with a little bit of room to spare. (shown in photos) The problem is.. this thing is straight up not designed correctly for a cat. The neck portion is far too straight and stiff, and prevents my cat from looking upwards. It should be substantially more flared out to accommodate for when a cat is down on all fours, but has their head up and alert. This 4-down-head-up posture is probably one of the most common positions for a cat to be in when they're chilling outside, so to see the vest interfere with that was disappointing. I'm okay with a needle and thread, so I'm going to cut the stitching on the neck portion of the vest, and redesign it myself. Because of this inability to sit in a normal position, my cat does not like the vest right now. I did a test where I took the spikes off the neck, and folded the neck back over on itself and out of the way, and he stopped walking around as if someone had his scruff permanently yanked on. He still wasn't happy with the stiffness, but it moved the issue down towards his shoulders, where he was able to quite literally shrug it off. My neighborhood is full of gnarly, greasy coyotes.. so to get this thing fitting him as comfortably and as soon as possible is a huge priority for me. If modifying the vest produces good results, I will update this review to a better star rating, because it is very well built, and I greatly appreciate them working to branch out to protect more pets. But whoever designed this has CLEARLY never been around a cat before.. lol You can see in the pictures how much the vest pushes on his scruff, even when he's standing unnaturally straight, upright, and rigid.. I also want to make it clear that I do NOT consider this a catastrophic failure of the product. I think, overall, it's a great product with major potential. However, they need to update their stitch patterns to meld better with standard cat postures."

Diesel kitty hates this, but

"Diesel kitty hates this, but if it saves his life it will be worth it. The first trial out, he came in without it. Fortunately, I found it behind our shop. I will be wrapping it more tightly around his neck!"

Protection from unruly K9s in Wales, UK

"My cat is an indoor cat, but I take out every day for fresh air and exercise. The spike vest fits well and protects from uncontrolled K9s that take one look at the spike vest and avoid. This is so much better and safer."

Able to enjoy outings and be safe

"Glad to get such speedy service. Tc was not sure he liked the stiffer collar but is use to walking with a harness so soon adopted to his new outfit. Wears it on his walk to pond at small conservation area. No hindrance moving through the bush back onto our property or climbing over logs or up on the bench to get treats..if he wants to go out on his own he has to wear it…some unleashed dogs in the conservation area have ended up on our property so Tc is much safer from them…and I am feeling much better about that. The collar is for the feral cat, Volcan, that Tc adopted, now living in the house. Pretty street smart but the collar offers more protection. Safety of my pets is important and these collars and vest make that a reality. There is a local fox the tries for squirrels near my bird feeders but the feral cat has chased him. Tc is not so assertive even though he probably weighs more than the fox. Both cats are protected now."

Quality Product and Peace of Mind

"Great product. Provides an additional layer of protection when I have my cat in our fenced yard. His Spike Vest gives me that extra peace of mind that so that he can walk around in the yard with more freedom. This is a quality product. I initially ordered a small vest but it did not appear to fit properly. I spoke with customer support and sent pictures. They suggested medium vest after reviewing the pictures. I immediately ordered a medium and sent back the small."

Q&A

Is there a way to remove the spikes from around the neck? Either by cutting it myself (without damaging the rest of the harness), or by some built-in way to remove it? My cats already have spiked collars, and it looks like the collar on your harnesses might restrict their movement.
Hi, We make the spike strips removable on all our stab-resistant vests. The purpose of the stab-resistant materials in the collar is to help protect the neck, where the most serious injuries occur. In regards to altering the stab-resistant vest it would depend on a persons sewing ability. Many customers put our CoyoteCollar over the stab-resistant vests to add an extra level of protect around the neck. Please feel free to give us a call 858-935-9069 or support@coyotevest.com.
Can you make a vest that also protects your cat from other cats like cover there under part as well from other cats cutting them open
Hi, We do have a stab-resistant vest made specifically for cats. We call it SpikeVest for Cats & it has a velcro wrap around the neck and around the body. It also includes the spikes on the collar, as well as two (2) spike strips for each side of the back. The middle velcro strip is for accessories ie. whiskers or you can purchase another spike strip for the middle of the back.
I just ordered 3 Coyote dog vests. Not able to ask questions. But wondered if my dog swim in it will it drag them down or will it float. They are good swimmers. Just small Dogs.
Our vests don't have any built in flotation, but they do work fine in the water and won't inhibit your dog's ability to swim.
Is there a particular color that a coyote is less likely to attack?
Hi Becky, The color is really up to your preference. Predators will see, smell and hear your fur baby regardless as they are hunters. The goal is to help deter and prevent the attack from happening by making your fur baby look different. Providing your fur baby with a different appearance will allow the predator rethink it's prey. The shiny plastic chrome spikes on the neck and back along with the whiskers help to deter. No one wants pokey sticks in their eyes and mouth so the goal is to have them move on to an easier prey. We have thousands of reviews/testimonials on our site and about 100,000 fur babies worldwide wearing our products. ❤ CoyoteVest Team
I have a tuxedo cat that can escape other vest/collar when charging other animals. (He doesn't play well with others AT ALL) Is the leash clip thick enough and attached securely that he can't break free? The double velcro strap and neck should hold pretty securely, I would think. We are in desperate need for something secure to walk him. He loves outside, he just hates 4 legged animals.
Hi Mel, The D-ring is securely attached to our SpikeVest for Cats. We have very active fur babies in all our vests, specifically CoyoteVests. We see fur babies hike, swim, etc and no problems with the D-ring. Hope that helps. -CoyoteVest Team
